The Red Hall in 1900

Photographed in 1900

The Red Hall was built around 1605 and had several owners but when railway came to Bourne in 1860 the building was sold to the Bourne and Essendine Railway Company for £1,305 and converted for use as the railway station, housing the ticket office and stationmaster’s residence, with a metal footbridge over the main line for passengers to reach the platforms.
Steam locomotives hauling both passenger and freight trains rumbled past daily but the stately mansion withstood the vibrations until the railway age ended a century later when the Red Hall stood empty and unwanted for a while until Bourne United Charities acquired the freehold in 1962 and have since preserved it for posterity.
