The Market Place - then and now

No 2 North Street overlooks the town centre, formerly the market place, and was an odd-shaped building even in the 19th century when it was the premises of the Presgrave Genuine Tea Warehouse. Tea at that time was enjoying such popularity that part of the grocery shop was devoted entirely to the sale of this product although the owner, Mr Thomas Presgrave, was also a draper and some of the clothing he sold can be seen in the side window including several straw boaters that were in vogue during that period. Mr Presgrave (centre) is pictured with his staff around 1856 although the shop was previously owned by his father John who was in business there as early as 1790.
