A buttress is an architectural structure built against or projecting from a wall which serves to support or reinforce the wall and are common on more ancient buildings such as churches as a means of providing support for roofs that lack adequate bracing. There are several examples at the Abbey Church, notably these on the north side, although they can be found at various points around the building with a particularly large example on the west front.
