Meadowgate
and Hereward Street

Meadowgate looking north

One of the narrowest and busiest streets in Bourne is Meadowgate, originally built for the horse and cart and barely 23 feet wide in places yet used as a feeder for the 166-space car park behind Budgens supermarket and is therefore the scene of busy traffic movement, especially on Thursday market days and Saturdays.

Most of the houses are Victorian and built of red brick, some with date stones and initials but there have been many modern improvements. The street connects with Harrington Street and then North Street at the double mini roundabouts and at the other end with Hereward Street and Abbey Road.

Hereward Street is a far less busy and contains a row of charming mid-19th century terraced houses build in red brick and blue slate, although many since personalised by recent owners who have changed window frames and doors.

Hereward Street

Kerbside parking in both streets is a permanent hazard, residents using the east side because the houses have no garages while visitors to the town use the west side whenever the car park is full. Meadowgate also has several rear access points for shop premises in North Street as well as Budgens supermarket.
